Statement

CIES has been my academic home since 2008. My dedication to the field since that time is evident in my 16 books, 75 articles, and numerous other academic outputs. My commitment to CIES can also be seen through SIG involvement, particularly the Globalization and Education (G&E) SIG, first as secretary and then as the co-chair (2013-2017). In these roles, I helped to expand and improve this SIG—one of the largest in the society. I also served on the CIES Nominations Committee (2014-5) and the Advisory Board for the Comparative Education Review (2016-2023). In addition to the annual US-based CIES, I have participated in a regional CIES conference (Lehigh), two conferences of WCCES (in Istanbul and Buenos Aires), and conferences of the Oceania CIES (Wellington and Sydney), where I have made strong connections. Practically speaking, I am well-suited to the Treasurer position given that I have a degree in finance, manage my own department’s budget as department chair, and have experience managing large research project budgets (~$1 million).

It is an honor to be nominated for the CIES Treasurer position. I am looking forward to working with the Board for the next three years and (perhaps oddly) I am excited about the work of the Treasurer position. It aligns well with my detail-oriented nature and my penchant for keeping things organized (who doesn’t love a well-formatted and clear spreadsheet?). My success over the years is, moreover, a consequence of my ability to work well with large teams. To that end, I look forward to working with and supporting the Board to contribute to the maintenance and vibrancy of CIES.

Long-term, my goals—beyond the Treasurer position—are to host a regional CIES conference in Hawai‘i; to strengthen the connections between the US-based CIES, the Oceania CIES and the Japan Comparative Education Society; and to support graduate students.
