CALL FOR PAPERS
CIES 2011 Montréal has as its theme "Education is that which Liberates" and will highlight education as a vehicle for liberation. In today’s conflict ridden world, education can be a powerful instrument in liberating people not only from ignorance and poverty, but also from superstition, fear, vulnerability, injustice, and social inequality—which remain the roots of tension and discord in our increasingly borderless world.
ON THE THEME
In a knowledge society, ignorance of scientific (social and natural) and technological knowledge creates inequality, and the moral imperative to work towards a sustainable world is ignored at great risk. Considering the dramatic impact of globalization, accelerated by electronic media and communication, education must be recognized as a powerful instrument for fighting against fundamentalism, narrow prejudices, and dogmatism. With the increasingly diverse nature of societies, disadvantaged groups and individuals are clamoring for social justice and opportunities to be included in the globalization process. Education has the potential to achieve a better life for disenfranchised people if directed towards empowerment and agency.
This year’s theme thus comprises all aspects of education that lead to student independence and agency. A culture of student engagement and participation is the dominant goal—and all theories, practices, and methods of education that focus on this aim are vital to the theme. Dimensions of pedagogy and practice, teacher education, and innovative methods of student participation designed to produce citizens who are engaged, critical, and productive agents of positive change likewise bear significantly upon the theme.
Liberation is a process as well as a goal in education. As a process, it has the ability to free students from the confines of education as a passive act by engaging them in active, cultural learning. As a goal, it represents the transformative and moral potential which educational philosophers have identified as necessary to overcome the barriers that prevent us from achieving a just and peaceful world.
GENERAL SUBMISSION PROCEDURES
CIES 2011 Montréal invites individual proposals for Panel Presentations, Round Tables, or Poster Sessions, as well as proposals for Group Panels consisting of up to four, pre-arranged individual panel presentations.
Proposals may be submitted for the general conference program or for a session organized by a CIES Committee or Special Interest Group (SIG). Information about the Gender & Education, New Scholars, and UREAG (Under-Represented Ethnic and Ability Groups) Committees —as well as all 18 SIGs— is available on the CIES website at http://www.cies.us/groups.htm.
Please note that if you submit your proposal to a SIG, you will be asked for your membership in that SIG at the time of registration. As part of the CIES 2011 Montréal conference registration process, a membership fee of $10 USD will be added for each SIG of which you are not yet a member.
If you are a doctoral student, you also have the option to submit a CIES New Scholar Fellow proposal for a dissertation workshop organized by the New Scholars Committee. This option has its own special requirements for submission; you can read them by clicking on “Workshops” in the navigation menu.
In order to promote the participation of CIES members at the conference, individuals will be limited to one paper presentation, regardless of format. However, you are welcome to participate in additional sessions as a panel chair and/or discussant.
Submitted proposals should address the theme of the conference or other related issues in comparative and international education. This may include, but is not limited to: on-going or recent empirical studies (qualitative or quantitative approaches); conceptual analysis; document accounts of policy, programs, or practices; or any other relevant issue.
All abstracts much be written in English. However, CIES 2011 Montréal is pleased to announce that we will be able to accommodate presentations in both English and French.
● If you are submitting an individual proposal for a Panel Presentation, a Round Table, or a Poster Session, you will be asked to submit an abstract of approximately 250 words in length.
Your abstract should:
(a) situate your topic;
(b) state the goal of your research;
(c) outline your theoretical/conceptual framework;
(d) outline your methodology/methods; and
(e) summarize your findings.
● If you are submitting a proposal for a pre-arranged Group Panel, you will be asked to submit a description of approximately 250 words in length, in addition to abstracts for each individual Panel Presentation.
Your description should:
(a) identify objectives of the overall panel session;
(b) describe how the session will be structured;
(c) outline your theoretical/conceptual framework; and explain the panel’s contribution to the field of comparative and international education and/or to the conference theme.
● You will be asked for some supplementary information regarding your proposal, including keywords and regional focus, as you proceed through the proposal submission process.
The Early Submission deadline is 11:59pm EST on October 17, 2010. Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and individuals who submit their proposals prior to this deadline will receive notification of acceptance or rejection by November 1, 2010.
As an additional incentive for Early Submission, the organizers of CIES 2011 Montréal will try to schedule your presentation towards the middle of this year’s conference. In addition, we will do our best to schedule your presentation and any duties (such as chair/discussant) in close proximity.
The Final Submission deadline is 11:59pm EST on November 14, 2010. Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and individuals who submit their proposals prior to this deadline will receive notification of acceptance or rejection by November 29, 2010.
Please note that CIES membership is required for all presenters at CIES 2011 Montréal. In addition, individuals who receive notification that their proposals have been accepted MUST register online. Registration will NOT be available on-site for presenters.
Online registration will close at 11:59pm EST on April 17, 2011. Presenters who have not registered by that time will automatically be removed from the conference program.
If you are new to CIES, you will be charged membership dues for 2011 as part of the registration process for full-week attendance of the conference. Once you become a member of CIES, you will receive an annual subscription to Comparative Education Review (published four times a year) and to the CIES Newsletter (published three times a year).
If you are already a CIES member for 2010, you should receive a membership renewal notice from The University of Chicago Press in October 2010 so that you may renew in time to participate in the 2011 event.
