We are pleased to announce our recently Special Interest Groups, approved by the CIES Board:

1) Latin America SIG: this group seeks to open the dialogue regarding the region’s educational experiences, achievements and challenges. Latin American educators, leaders and scholars offer through their research and experiences the opportunity to celebrate the accomplishment of goals and the launching of projects in the region.

2) Eurasia SIG: The CIES Eurasia SIG will bring together educational researchers and practitioners working on or in Eurasia.

Eurasia is herein understood to include: post-Soviet countries; post-socialist regions; those countries that were previously educated under the U.S.S.R.; Eastern European countries; those countries whose histories were impacted by Soviet or socialist policy.

3) Global Literacy SIG: The rationale for this special interest group is:
*      to serve as a body and a means of collecting relevant information on global literacy activities
*      to serve as a venue for distributing relevant information on global literacy to CIES members and the public
*      to serve as a link between CIES members, the society, and other agencies and institutions interested in global literacy

Literacy is increasingly used as a key intervention outcome. However, the theoretical and practical understanding of how literate behavior is developed or how it is meaningfully assessed are typically lacking in CIES papers and presentations. Other times, papers and presentations confound literacy with language development or other education objectives. Still others position (or fail to act on opportunities to position) literacy outcomes as a cross-cutting activities (outside of education) pertaining to issues in global health, development, finance,  social cohesion, gender studies, law and media, and cultural identity.

The CIES SIG on global Literacy will serve as a stimulus for global partnerships for local literacy research in the economically developing world.
