CIES
2008 New Scholars Workshop
Application for the CIES 2009 New Scholars Workshop
Monday, March 23, 2009 & Tuesday, March 24, 2009
8:00 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.
The overall goal of the New Scholars Workshop is to support new scholars in the field of Comparative and International Education. More specifically, the New Scholars Workshop aims to support graduate students in their dissertation research, by providing a supportive space in which graduate students can present, discuss and get feedback from both faculty and peers on various areas of their research and research process. The day is structured into two parts; the first part of the day is a time for students to more formally present their research or proposed research and then have faculty provide feedback, the second part of the day is a time for students to less formally pair up with a peer/mentor to discuss their research. Finally, it is hoped that both faculty and graduate students are able to benefit and learn from each other through this exchange of research, hopefully providing more ideas to ponder, reflect upon and discuss at another CIES conference!
Purpose of Workshop
Every year CIES holds a New Scholars Workshop at the annual CIES conference. This
all-day workshop is a unique opportunity for Ph.D. and Ed.D. students to discuss their
dissertation research with other doctoral students and experienced scholars in the field.
This will improve your work and it will strengthen links between international education
programs.
Time/Format of Workshop
The doctoral candidate workshop will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 3:45 p.m. on either
Monday or Tuesday, March 23 - 24, 2009. In order to allow the greatest number of new
scholars to participate, students will be selected to participate in ONE full day. The workshop will consist of formal presentation sessions, each followed by a feedback
period, to allow participants adequate time for constructive discussion with students and
resource faculty. A group luncheon for all workshop participants will be held between
the morning and afternoon sessions. Candidates are required to participate the entire day.
