Thank you for your interest in the South Asia SIG at CIES.

The mission of the South Asia SIG is to create a community of researchers, policy-makers and practitioners interested in educational and social issues related to South Asia and South Asian Diaspora. The group aims to provide the much needed space for discussing and exchanging current research, policy, and best practices from the region and beyond and to serve as a networking forum for graduate students, practitioners, policy makers and researchers. We also publish monthly newsletters for our SIG members to assist in this community-building initiative by highlighting research and practices related to the field of education and development in a South Asian perspective. For a more in-depth view of the SIG's initiatives please visit our blog at http://sasigcies.wordpress.com/.

CIES 2012: South Asia SIG - Call for Proposals

CIES Annual Conference 2012

The 56th Annual Meeting of the Comparative and International Education Society will be held from Sunday, April 22, to Friday, April 27 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The South Asia SIG will be organizing a number of panels at the up-coming CIES Annual Conference. The SIG is also instituting a "Best Dissertation Award" for a recent scholar who has received his/her doctorate within the past 5 years.

South Asia is a complex region with great diversity in culture, development, geography, politics, religion, and socio-economics. Home to some of the world's most populous countries and with some of lowest levels of literacy, the region faces daunting development challenges – no where is this more evident than in the realm of education. South Asia SIG hopes to bring together the development community in order to foster dialogue among current and future leaders, policy makers, practitioners, academics, and students interested in educational issues in South Asia. The panels organized by the South Asia SIG hopes to be a platform for current and future leaders to share ideas and knowledge, and learn about current innovations in the field.

The South Asia SIG does not specify any research topic or methodology that will be given priority. We will keep in mind the issues of regional fit and diversity. We will also be giving preference to researchers who have not received SIG support from us in the past over those who have presented through the SIG before. As a SIG, we will also strive to highlight the work of new scholars.
