THE LANGUAGE ISSUES SIG WEBSITE HAS BEEN MOVED, YOU SHOULD BE REDIRECTED TO WORDPRESS

The Language Issues SIG is a network of researchers and practitioners working to understand the role of language(s) in education, as well as the role of the languages of instruction in differing, and often contentious, political and cultural contexts.

The goal of LISIG is to form a network for people interested in understanding, researching, challenging, and/or implementing educational language policies.  We do this by meeting annually at the CIES conference, sponsoring panels, and keeping each other informed about other conferences, seminars, and publications of interest.

CIES Annual Conference 2011

Call for Papers and CIES proposal submission due dates

Planning for the next CIES conference in Montreal (May 1-5, 2011) is already underway! The early submission deadline is October 17, 2010 (which is strongly encouraged), while final submission deadline is November 14, 2010.

The Languages Issues SIG (LI SIG) encourages proposals for this year’s conference that engage with the theme “Education is that which Liberates” in terms of the role that language plays in education. As the general call for papers states in compelling terms, “Liberation is a process as well as a goal in education.” The LI SIG welcomes proposals that examine how language can serve to facilitate or to thwart the liberatory process in education.

Language here can and should be conceived of in broad terms: of domains (e.g., policy, curriculum, pedagogy, practice, etc.); and of models (e.g., additional dialect, bilingual/dual language, heritage, Indigenous, mother tongue, translanguaging, etc.). Moreover, we welcome proposals that explore language-in-education from diverse epistemological, theoretical and methodological perspectives.

The LI SIG is particularly interested in individual paper proposals that address both the conference theme and how language interacts with it. Group panels will be considered, but given the limited number of sessions allocated to each SIG, we encourage SIG members interested in a group panel to consider submitting their work under the general submission process.

Please see the general call for papers (http://cies2011.mcgill.ca/CIES_2011_Montreal/Call_For_Papers.html) for proposal guidelines. Keep in mind that in order to submit to this or any SIG, you will be required to join the SIG and contribute your membership dues ($10 USD) before uploading any proposals.

To proceed to the proposal submission site, go to http://cies2011.mcgill.ca and click on “Call For Papers” in the navigation menu.

We look forward to receiving and reviewing your conference proposals. In the meantime, please stay connected with the LI SIG through its website: http://cieslanguagesig.wordpress.com/
